June Goals

Having the seen the doctor last week, I need to set some goals for June.  Before that, it was difficult to set up goals since I didn’t know what activity I would be allowed.  Right now I am transitioning away from the walker.  Over a 2 week period I am to go from 25% weight bearing to full weight bearing and walking without the walker.  After that two weeks is up (about June 19), I can start doing weight bearing physical therapy and can move around as I tolerate it. So, I want to increase activity, but recognize I can’t really set any specific cardio goals, since I just don’t know what I will be able to do when.FitbitOne

At this point, I plan over the next 3 weeks to:

1.  Buy an elliptical and/or a recumbent exercise bike.  I know I need to be able to do some real cardio exercise and the Concept2 rower isn’t really working for that.  If I baby my knee so that it doesn’t hurt, then my heart rate doesn’t get high enough.  If I work hard enough for my heart rate to get high enough, then my knee hurts.  I am going to continue gently using it until a get something else but a need to find something as a long term solution.  In the past, I’ve dawdled around to find an alternative.  This was a factor last summer when I gained weight.  I had realized it was too hot to walk outside and intended to buy a treadmill, but it took 3 months to get it done.  During that time, I was in the house not doing anything.  I don’t want that to happen this time.  Of course, once bought, use it to the extent that I’m allowed to do so.

2. Do the home exercises given to me by the physical therapist. I am supposed to do these until I can do weight bearing exercise.  I will be diligent about doing these each day.

3. Once I can walk without the walker, go to the physical therapist.  This won’t be for a couple of weeks, but I want to do this so I can increase my strength and help prevent future injury.

4. Do an upper body strength workout at least 2 times a week. I did this some in May, but when I got sick it kind of went by the wayside and hasn’t come back.  While there are some exercises I can’t do right now, there are a lot of exercises that I can do.I could add in some stuff about eating, but really I just want to stay on plan overall with eating and there isn’t that much to say about it.  I have some things I want to do in terms of what I eat, but most of that really requires me to be able to get around more easily so I can make my own food.  While I am still using the walker and have limited mobility, I have to depend more on others so I can’t really do a lot of new stuff.  I think I’ll save those goals until July.  Right now, I just want to stay with my eating so that I’m getting at least some sort of a calorie deficit on Fitbit.

    I hope that your orthopedic woes will soon be on the mend and you can get back to your activity level. But I will say that you are an inspiration to me as you are not letting this get you down and are still plugging along the best you can. Boy, those orthopedic situations can try our patience, though.

    Well, it has been a struggle. For some reason, this week has been more of a struggle eating. Maybe because I have my appetite back since I’m not sick, but I still don’t like my limited activity and I’m feeling sorry for myself. I haven’t eaten badly, exactly but haven’t created much of a calorie deficit either….
