A Balanced Day

One of my goals for this quarter is better time management and to have balance in my life.  I tend to go all in on some one thing (playing World of Warcraft, reading, walking, etc.) and then neglect doing other things that I would also like to do.  I can end up spending the whole day and evening at the computer if I’m not careful.  It is just way easy to get up, catch up on the news online, go place WoW for awhile, surf the Web watching and reading whatever, play WoW, go pay bills online, check out this and that online, read blogs, write this blog, play WoW and…..suddenly realize it is 2:00 AM.

Back toward the end of 2013, I started pulling back from playing WoW.  I knew I wanted to concentrate on weight loss and getting more fit.  So, around the time I started this blog I decided that weight loss/exercise would be my focus and that this was a good time to take a breather from WoW.  For a few months, I play WoW on a limited basis.  Then, starting in late January I basically quit playing entirely.  I logged on occasionally but not usually for more than 5 or 10 minutes.  During this time, I was really spending almost all my free time focused on weight loss and fitness.  I would go to blogs and read them.  I would post here.  I was exercising a lot (probably leading to my trabecular bone injury).

Then, in August I decided it was time to play WoW again (I never planned to give it up permanently).  And, for a few months, I found it really hard to balance that with other leisure time stuff I want to do.  The thing is that I don’t want to just play WoW.  And, I don’t want to just exercise or focus on weight loss.  And, I don’t want to just read.  I want to manage my time so that I have balance in doing all these things.

So, today, I really tried to do that and I’ve been happy with how it worked out.

I got up about 10:30 (remember, night owl, so I sleep late).  I usually get up, head to the computer and read the news and just check out what is going on in the world.  Somewhere in there I logged into WoW, to check on some daily tasks I do (I don’t always do them every day).  I had the game on one screen and my browser on my other.  After I got woke up, Charles and I decided to go out to lunch at Panera’s.  I ordered a Pick Two with the Power Chicken Hummus Bowl (140 calories), Turkey chili (190 calories) and 1 oz. of chips (150 calories), for a total of 12 Points Plus.  I ate lightly because I also bought a Cinnamon Crunch Bagel which is 420 calories (11 PP).  I love that bagel.  Last year when I was doing well, I would order one occasionally but not every time I was there.  In the fall, I would usually get two of them when we went to Panera’s.  I would have one in the evening as a snack and the other for breakfast.  Last time I was at Panera’s, though, I didn’t have one and the time before that I had one so I thought I could “afford” one this time.  Saturday was the start of my Weight Watchers week and I ate 33 points.

It was a little cold at Panera’s (43 degrees outside, but the door opening and closing kept it a little chilly in the restaurant).  We left and normally would have gone grocery shopping but decided to just go home since it was cold.

After getting home, I played a little WoW, surfed the Web a bit, and called my mom on Skype.  I suddenly realized it was 4:30 and the day was getting away from me.  I wanted to do more reading, so I left the computer and read for about an hour and a half.  I had a snack of an ounce of Antep Turkish Pistachios (I have this snack almost every day). At one point, I went to get something from my office and found that my Ragdoll, Sasha aka Fluffy had appropriated my chair.

All the while I was reading, I was mentally debating whether to exercise. “You only have to exercise 3 times this week and you already did one day so you could take off.” “Yes, but this has been an inactive day so I should do something.” “No, you are too tired.” “If I exercise, I won’t be as tired and I’ll be glad I did it.”

And, so, I hopped on the treadmill and walked for 40 minutes.  I walked pretty slowly between 2 and 2.5 mph for almost all of it, but managed to keep it up for 40 minutes, burning 217 calories!

This was notable because it was the first time I used the treadmill since early May, when the doctor told me I had to go non-weight bearing to try to heal my leg injury. He had cleared me to use the treadmill in August, but I hadn’t done it (I’ve had a few outside walks). I took it slowly and didn’t use incline at all and I didn’t feel any pain in my leg or knee. While I was walking I was watching something I had recorded on my DVR (I haven’t been watching TV either).

Then, I read and had dinner. I had some BBQ Potstickers that I like because the wrapper is whole grain. I needed some more veggies servings so I had a package of Green Giant Green Beans and Almonds (I ate all 3 servings, the total was only 120 calories).

After that, I came back to my computer and wrote this post. So far I’ve eaten 28 Points Plus for the day and have left room for a late night snack. Yes, yes, I know lots of people advise against them. But, being a late night kind of person who goes to bed about 2:00 am I need a late night snack.

After I post this, I am going to play a little more WoW, then read a little, and get a good night’s sleep. I’m happy with how I balanced out the day so that I did a little bit of several things I enjoy doing instead of just sitting at the computer the entire day and evening.
