September Weigh In

I weighed in for September and was at 140.4 pounds, up .6 pounds from August.  I was fairly happy with the weigh in.  Right now I am having lots of swelling from my tummy tuck surgery.  I just hit 8 weeks after surgery and the swelling now is worse than it has been.  I think part of that is that I’m more active than I was so I have more swelling, I’m not wearing a compression garment as often, but the new drainage paths still haven’t developed.  As I understand the incision basically cuts the drainage paths and they have to be re-established, but that takes 3 or 4 months.  In the meantime, I tend to have swelling.

I have some in the morning and it just gets worse as the day goes on.  By evening, my waistline is actually 2 to 2 1/2 inches larger than it is in the morning.  Right now, though there seems to be constant swelling.  It gets better over night, but doesn’t go away entirely.

I know this is temporary.  In a month or two, I expect most of it to go away.  Although, I understand it can take up to a year to have full healing.  The bottom line is that right now it is hard to really get a feel for my “true” weight, since part of it is the swelling.

I am feeling much, much better than I felt when I posted in August.  At about 5 to 6 weeks post-surgery, I started to get my energy back and was able to start sitting up my desk for longer periods.  And, finally, most of the back pain has gone away.  I had a little bit this weekend when I was at the mall and walked around a lot and had to stand for awhile and then sat on a stool where I had no back support.  Other than that, I’ve felt much better the last two weeks.

I haven’t yet gotten back to formal exercise.  I still have restrictions on weight lifting, but I am cleared to walk.  It is too hot to walk outside here and I haven’t been quite ready to use the treadmill.  But, I do think I am about ready to do so.   I haven’t been very active since having surgery in May.  I have had good reasons for the lack of activity to this point, but it is time to start getting back to walking and using the exercise bike.

I also plan to be posting more.  Much of the last month, I’ve spent trying to get caught up with things that I got behind on while I was recovering from surgery and wasn’t able to sit at my desk for long periods.  I’m finally to a point where I feel I have more time and am mostly caught up.

Hi Kitty, I have been following your blog for several months, and want to thank you for the encouragement it’s given me as I worked the Weight Watchers program. I have lost 23 pounds in 7 months and am just 2 pounds away from my goal weight of 140. You’ve written about the importance of exercise in losing weight, and I agree completely. I just wanted to share that , besides exercising regularly, it’s important to vary your routine. I am over 60 and really worried that losing 25 pounds would leave my body looking droopy. But that hasn’t happened, and I’m convinced it’s because of exercise. I have done aerobics for many years, but as I began losing weight I expanded my routine to include Pilates, weight training, and yoga. This has helped a lot with core strength, muscle tone, and flexibility. I never thought my torso and upper arms could look this good at my age, and most important I feel great!
