Surgery Update

It has been 6 days since I had the surgery that I posted about a couple of weeks ago.  I wanted to post an update.  Things have gone well, although this recovery has actually been more painful than either my previous surgeries.

I had surgery last Monday.  Basically there were two parts to the surgery.  First, I was having some facial surgery.  I was having a revision to my right eye lift to remove some additional skin.  While I was overall happy with my results I felt I had a little more skin drooping on my right eye than my left.  My surgeon had indicated that my brow was a little lower on the right eye (that is, it started that way) and removing any more skin in the initial surgery would have resulted in too long of a scar.  So, I have known for months that I would likely want to have this revision done.

Additionally I had a couple of final cholesterol deposits removed on both eyes near my nose.  I had a number of these deposits previously removed, but they can’t be done all in one surgery.

This is how my right eye looked in April.

2016 in Review

2016 was an interesting year.  From a weight standpoint, on the surface, things were kind of quiet.  At my December 2015 weigh in I weighed 145.4 pounds, which was just under my Weight Watchers goal weight of 146 pounds.  At my last December 2016 weigh in, I weighed 142.8 pounds.  Not much change there. My highest Weight Watchers weigh in was 147.8 pounds just a few days before my tummy tuck/breast lift in July.  My lowest weigh ins were 142.8 pounds in both April and December.

Plastic Surgery

My plastic surgery was really the dominant event of the year.   Losing over 65 pounds has been great.  But, weight loss just exacerbated my loose skin on both my face and body.  I worked with a personal trainer for almost a year and I got stronger.  But, it didn’t do anything to repair my abdominal muscles and loose skin that I had had ever since pregnancy.  Losing weight had helped get rid of fat, but it didn’t get rid of the loose skin.  That was like an elastic band that had been stretched out and that would never return to what it had been before.

I had been thinking about surgery for years, even while I was still losing weight.  As I got smaller, I felt my tummy still looked fat.  I read on blogs and websites (I especially liked Realself) about tummy tucks and thought it might be what I needed to get rid of the loose skin and repair the abdominal muscles.   As I read on Realself, I started to read about people having facial cosmetic surgery.  I hated my turkey neck and my sagging eyelids.  Even when I was much younger, I felt my eyelids drooped.  But, I hadn’t really thought about doing anything surgically.  At some point, I realized that if I did the tummy tuck, I would still hate looking at pictures since my face didn’t really reflect how I felt about myself.  So, I decided to do facial surgery. Going Off Track

Honestly, I’ve been mostly off track for the past six weeks or so. I’ve been over on my points for several of those weeks and haven’t had a calorie deficit a lot of the time.  I’ve had a couple of good weeks, but more bad weeks than good weeks.

It is still hard to exactly gauge my true weight due to post-surgery swelling.  I am almost 3 months post tummy tuck/breast lift so that is starting to lessen, but is still present. I still see my waist line changing by 2 to 3 inches during the course of the day.  Still, I think that I am truly up about 2 or 3 pounds from my September weigh in.  I will be weighing in Saturday and currently am up almost 4 pounds from the September weigh in, but I don’t think all of that is true weight gain since my weight is still fluctuating a lot.

So, this seems like a good time to talk about going off track and how to get back on.  I do think I have caught this early and feel I am getting back on track.  So far, this has been a good week.

So, what caused me to go off track?  I think there are several factors:

Change of Routine – This is the biggest factor.  I do well when I have a routine and have good habits.  When we moved to our current home, I gained about 12 pounds in the first couple of months after moving.  At that point I had lost almost 50 pounds, so the regain was a real shock.  And, that gain put me in a downward spiral that ended up as a 35 pound weight gain.  The first step on going off track at that time was that I wasn’t following my usual routine.  We were looking at houses a couple of hours away from where we were living so we ended up eating out a lot more.  That put pressure on my caloric intake and so I got into a calorie surplus and it all spiraled down. I Don’t Think About My Appearance Much Now

Since having facial plastic surgery and a mommy makeover (tummy tuck + breast list), I have found that I think about my appearance much less than I did before.  Yes, I do take more care with my appearance now when I go out.  When I would often go out with no makeup before, I now spend 5 minutes on it.  Where I used to spend 15 minutes on a special occasion getting ready to go out, I will now spend 20 minutes.  Basically, before I often felt it was no use to try to make the effort and I now I feel that it is useful.

And, I’m still in the recovery period and have some things still to be done to complete all of my plans.  I am having a small revision in November on my facial surgery (mostly fixing how my ear lobe healed and piercing my ears again and doing the final group of excisions of my cholesterol deposits).  I will addressing some things not covered by the facial surgery, such as doing a Resurfx laser treatment on my face.  And, while I am ecstatically happy with my tummy tuck, I still have a lot of swelling during the day (this should slowly abate over the next couple of months). So, yes, I still think about those things.

But, the rest of the time I don’t think about my appearance much at all.  Last night, we went out for my husband’s birthday.  Afterwards, I took a quick picture of him and he took one of me.

September Weigh In

I weighed in for September and was at 140.4 pounds, up .6 pounds from August.  I was fairly happy with the weigh in.  Right now I am having lots of swelling from my tummy tuck surgery.  I just hit 8 weeks after surgery and the swelling now is worse than it has been.  I think part of that is that I’m more active than I was so I have more swelling, I’m not wearing a compression garment as often, but the new drainage paths still haven’t developed.  As I understand the incision basically cuts the drainage paths and they have to be re-established, but that takes 3 or 4 months.  In the meantime, I tend to have swelling.
